Descripción de Council of Europe high level meeting on Roma- Oct 20, 2010:
Strasbourg, Oct 20, 2010 (Fonet) -- Council of Europe and the European Commission believe something must be done to improve the position of Roma, Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland and European Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Viviane Reding. At a joint news conference, Jagland said the CoE will train 450 mediators, who would help the Roma to fulfill their basic rights such are the rights to an apartment and education, but if there is financial support, their number could increase to 1400. They would mediate between the Roma population and the civic society, Jagland explained. According to him, the CoE also wants to train around 100 lawyers who could help the Roma fulfill their rights. These are measures which would be implemented immediately if the participants of the conference on Roma decide to do so. The Conference is held at the CoE Headquarters, Jagland said. We have been talking for a long time about this problem, but little has been done and this should be used to do even more, Jagland emphasized. Reding said around 10 million Roma, EU citizens, live in poverty, without education or future for improving their position. We should not resolve legal problems and forget about people's problems, she warned. Reding emphasized that everything that happened lately regarding the Roma has been a warning that something must be done. www.fonet.rs --------------------------------------------------------------------- STRAZBUR, 20. oktobar 2010.
