His father, uncles and aunts sung and danced to the tunes of Arsenio Rodriguez, Septeto Nacional, Ignacio Piñero, Beny More, Vicentico Valdez, Maria Teresa Vera, Acerina y su Danzonera, Chano Pozo y Conjunto Azul, Cortijo y su Combo, Noro Morales, Moncho Leña, Canario, Matancera, Cheo Belen Puigh, Jorrin, Aragon, Mario, Machito and The AfroCubans Miguelito Valdez, Giraldo Rodriguez, and too many to mention here! On the Jazz Side, Armstrong, Errol Gardner, Art Tatum, Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Coltrane , Parker, Monk, Ellington, Nat "King" Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, list goes on.. Papo began his professional career as a percussionist with the well known actress, dancer, choreographer and folklorist Ms. Sylvia del Villar, in his native island of Puerto Rico. Early in his professional role, he displayed his talents in every musical genre-from traditional to contemporary styles. Papo's general knowledge is not limited to the musical expression, but also linked to the history, evolution and ritualistic participation of the percussion tools. While still in High School his powerfull and natural way of playing timbales impressed Master and pioneer latin /jazz trap set player Walfredo de los Reyes Sr. which took him under his wing as a private student. During that educational period, Papo continued to perform on local bands (playing variuos percussion styles) at televisions, radios and theater gigs. In 1980, after been initiated as an Omo Aña (Aña Ilu Adde sacred Bata Drums), Sterling flew to Germany as a guest member of Tito Puente Latin Jazz Ensemble (Frankfurt, Munich and Spain were the key points visited in that tour). After that wonderful experience, Papo Sterling decided to move to Los Angeles and San Francisco, California where he played continuosly with Master drummer Francisco Aquabella and his Afro-Cuban Folkloric Group, John Santos and Walfredo de los Reyes Sr. among others. The Divine Forces gave him the opportunity to share stages with well knwn artistic figures as Tito Puente, Julio Collazo, Steve Berrios, Hendel Dueño, Carlos "Patato" Valdez, Walfredo de los Reyes, Celia Cruz and Sonora Matancera, Daniel Ponce, Hilton Ruiz, Giovanny Hidalgo, Lucecita Benitez and others. After more than twenty years of musical evolution; discovering, applying and teaching others the magic of being skin to skin and his expertise in Afro-Cuban percussion and rhythms, place him in a category of "the privilegiados". His performances are experiences that are deeply engraved in the heart of his audiences.
